Why does The Madelon, with its modern architecture, exist in the heart of Georgetown’s historic area?

The site was originally a chicken farm, then became industrial as a dairy distribution center for horse drawn wagons. By the 1970's there was a vacant industrial building.

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved the Metcalf-designed mixed use complex of six buildings for the site, and construction was completed in 1980.
